Conclusion of the 125th Anniversary of Ministry at St. Catherine of Siena Church

Please join us on Tuesday August 29th for the conclusion of the 125th anniversary year of the Dominican Friars’ ministry at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Our special anniversary Mass to thank the Lord for his merciful love shown at this church for so many years will begin at 5:15pm. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan will be the main celebrant, and a light reception will follow in St. Joseph’s hall.In 1897 the Church of St. Catherine of Siena was established, first as a mission of St. Vincent Ferrer and then as its own parish for the sake of the working class Irish immigrants of the neighborhood. In 1932 Cornell University Medical College and New York Hospital moved to their current joint location on York Avenue, and the priests of St. Catherine extended their spiritual care to the sick and those who care for them. Other hospitals and medical centers moved to the neighborhood in the following years and they continue to grow and expand. Today there are over 2,000 hospital beds in the neighborhood. St. Catherine of Siena is the patron of those who care for the sick, and it is a remarkable sign of her patronage that so many hospitals should choose to move within her church’s care. The friars and lay volunteers of Dominican Healthcare Ministry are proud to call the Church of St. Catherine our home, and to bring the light of Christ to the sick and those who care for them under St. Catherine’s patronage. We give thanks to the Lord for the gifts and blessings we have received here, and pray that he will continue to guide and protect this community of faith. If you are unable to celebrate with us in person, please join us in prayer for our ministry, for the sick, and for those who care for them.
